Start with your event type

We’ll use a real-world example of a County Fair

County fairs can be broken down into 3 pillars

  1. Rodeo
  2. Carnival
  3. Country Music Concert

What Are They Interested In:

From those 3 pillars of the event, we can break out who likes each pillar like this:

  1. Rodeo
    • Bull riding
    • Rodeo sports
    • Western music
  2. Carnival
    • Amusement parks
    • Rides
    • Games
  3. Music
    • Country music
    • Western 
    • Music
    • Concerts

Group By Age:

Now that we’ve defined our audiences, we need to narrow down an age group of our ideal customers, let’s go one step further:

  1. Rodeo
    • Bull riding
    • Rodeo sports
    • Western music
      • 21-45
  2. Carnival
    • Amusement parks
    • Rides
    • Games
      • 8-18
  3. Music
    • Country music
    • Western 
    • Music
    • Concerts
      • 21-60

If this event was based on gender, for example, a women’s expo, we’d add gender into our mix as well.

Now we know exactly who we want to target for these 3 pillars of this County Fair event!

Creative Ads:

Great, now how do we market to them?

The easiest and most simple way is through Facebook and Instagram ads. Actually, when you set up Facebook ads, you can automatically push them to Instagram too!

We’re going to want to build 3 custom audiences, with the parameters we listed above.

Next, we’ll want to create an ad for each audience, here are a few ideas:

  1. Rodeo
    • Bucking bull picture
    • Rodeo video
  2. Carnival
    • Ferris wheel ride
    • Kids having fun on a ride
  3. Country Music Concert
    • Country music concert video
    • Headliner singer picture

Launch those ads with a small amount of ad spend, just to test the waters.

If possible, you’ll also want to set up a tracking pixel. 

If you can set up pixel tracking, you’ll want to duplicate each ad you’ve created and make it a retargeting ad for everyone that visited your site that the pixel has been tracking.

The timeline we like to follow is like this:

30-90 days out -> Run ads to increase awareness and build up an audience

0-30 days out -> Run retargeting ads to harvest all of the people we’ve built up the past 30-90 days
